COVID-19: Tips for Working from Home During Self-Isolation
How to Best Work from Home
Find a Centering Space
You want to feel relaxed while working from home. But not so relaxed that you lose focus. Find a space to work that promotes greater concentration, but still keeps stress to a minimum. For example, sitting by a window in a quieter area of the house removes distractions and gives you plenty of natural light.
Use Available Tools and Technology
There are plenty of free tools to make the transition to working from home during COVID-19 self-isolation easier, without leaving you feeling totally cut off from your clients and coworkers. Google offers a suite of word processing, slide, and spreadsheet software with lots of free storage space on Google Drive. And there are plenty of video call platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Hangouts to keep lines of communication open safely in a way that still feels personable and friendly.
Focus on Availability
When you do communicate with customers and teammates, focus communication on times when you are available, and what you are able to do. That can be reassuring to people in a time of unknowns. If you are not available, that’s okay. Just put it on your calendar and set your out-of-office reply with the information people need to get in touch with the right person.
Set a Schedule
While you may not be able to stick to as rigid a schedule as you had in your office, setting your start time, end time, and lunch time is a great way to begin adjusting to working from home. Using a Google calendar to share availability or track meetings can also be helpful, so no important work check-ins slip through the cracks.
Remember to Take Breaks
In times when a lot of people need a lot of help, it can be tempting to keep on working, even when you would normally be home. But it’s important to keep that all-important family time, or alone time, as part of your daily routine so you have the energy you need to do the best you can to serve your customers when it’s time to get back to work.
